| Making
adobe bricks in Putre, Chile |
||
|
First you get together a
big pile of dirt and wet |
Then, you add in the
lighter colored clay dirt |
|
|
Then, you get some straw
and put it in the pile, |
Meanwhile, the wood mold or form is kept in water so the adobe won't stick to it, ie build up and deform the bricks. |

So they shovel the wet adobe into the form, and the consistency is such that immediately the form can be taken off. Note that 2 bricks are made with the form, and as they dry they get very light colored. After the bricks are dry enough to move, about a day, they are first turned over to dry more evenly, then put on end to keep drying and to make more space in the yard for the new bricks. Then after about a week or 10 days they can be stacked on top of each other, or used for construction. They are very heavy.
